FHP: Father and son killed in fiery crash in Lake County

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a crash in Lake County that left a father and son dead on Christmas Eve.

Troopers were called to the intersection of State Road 46 and State Road 429 in Sorrento just before 1:30 p.m. for a crash involving two vehicles with one of them on fire.

According to FHP, a 21-year-old Summerfield man was driving an SUV eastbound on State Road 46 when he crossed into the westbound lanes.

A sedan traveling westbound on State Road 46 collided with the SUV head-on then caught fire, according to FHP.

The driver of the sedan, identified only as a 49-year-old man from Eustis, died at the crash scene. A 27-year-old man in the passenger seat was taken to Orlando Health and died there.

Troopers say the two men were father and son.

The driver of the SUV was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital with minor injuries. Troopers have not determined what caused him cross into oncoming traffic.

Traffic was diverted entirely from the area for hours while troopers worked to figure out what caused the crash.

As of 6 p.m., the intersection was still blocked. They’re asking drivers to try to avoid the area.
