ORLANDO, Fla. — Fifteen local Navy enlistees are expected to tackle obstacle courses at Orlando Spartan Weekend in Lake Nona this weekend, according to Navy representatives.

The event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10-11, at 6955 Lake Nona Blvd.

Spartan races combine running with obstacles that require competitors to climb, crawl and jump, testing strength and endurance.

Some of the participating enlistees have qualified for Navy special operations roles, according to the Navy. The announcement did not specify which roles.

The Navy is also sponsoring the “Extra Mile,” an optional extension that competitors can take on after completing the main racecourse.

Attendees can try a pull-up bar challenge and a reaction drill. Members of Navy special operations teams are also expected to attend throughout the weekend.

“The Spartan ‘Extra Mile’ reflects exactly the kind of mindset we look for in the U.S. Navy,” said Rear Adm. James P. Waters, commander of Navy Recruiting Command.

The Navy announcement did not include race start times, registration prices or spectator admission details.
