BUNNELL, Fla. — Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Joseph Barile has resigned after nearly two decades with the agency.
Sheriff Rick Staly accepted Barile’s resignation effective Thursday, Sept. 10, according to the sheriff’s office. Barile had worked for FCSO since Jan. 31, 2007, serving in Community Policing, Investigative Services, Homeland Security and the Special Investigation Unit before being appointed chief deputy in January 2025.
“We respect Joe’s decision to resign from the agency and move his life in a new direction,” Staly said. “We wish Joe the best in his future endeavors.”
In his resignation letter to Staly, Barile wrote that he did not make the decision lightly but was ready to “start a new chapter” in his life. He also thanked the agency for the opportunities he had received and said he was honored to have served the community since 2007.
Chief deputy position will not be filled
The sheriff’s office said Barile’s position will remain vacant as the agency works through budget and staffing concerns.
According to FCSO, the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners approved four new deputy sheriff positions but reduced overall funded staffing by one position. The City of Palm Coast also indicated it would fund only two of nine deputy sheriff positions that had previously been agreed upon for the upcoming fiscal year.
Staly said the agency has a greater need for additional deputies as Flagler County grows and calls for service increase. Rather than replace Barile, his duties will be divided among the division chiefs, chief of staff and sheriff.
