WATCH: Deputy rescues toddler from house fire

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — A Flagler County deputy rescued a 3-year-old boy from a house fire in Palm Coast on Sunday.

Deputies said K-9 Deputy First Class Marcus Dawson arrived at the scene and saw movement in the back bedroom of the home, where he found a 3-year-old boy hiding in fear under a blanket.

Dawson said a fire had started in the kitchen that was spreading to the cabinets, and thick black smoke was filling the home.

Bodycam video of the incident shows Dawson calling for anyone inside the home to respond, but getting no response.

Deputies said the toddler’s father had said he went to pick up dinner and left the sleeping child home with an older sibling.

“Without DFC Dawson immediately running toward danger, even without a safety respirator, this could have been a much different outcome,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a statement. “This child was hiding in fear of the fire and smoke watching a cartoon on his phone when, thankfully, DFC Dawson’s training in emergency response allowed him to find this child and safely rescue him.”

Deputies said no one was injured in the fire, and the scene was turned over to Palm Coast Fire Department. Investigators said they believe the fire was accidental and possibly cooking-related.
