Flagler County women’s self-defense class trains over 3,000 women

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — One Flagler County self-defense course accomplished a milestone this week.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Community Engagement Unit hosted its 203rd women’s self-defense class and trained the 3,000th female participant on Jan. 26.

The unit held the most recent class at the Palm Coast Community Center.

Women have attended the course since 2007 to feel better prepared for an attacker.

The sheriff’s office said three classes focus on safety techniques, including awareness, fighting, defensive tactics and escaping an attacker. Attendees can test their skills on deputies in padded suits at the end of the course.

“I believe an engaged and trained community is a safer community,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “I commend Commander Lutz and his team for their 3,000th graduate.”
