Florida manatee recovering after crab trap entanglement leads to flipper amputation

ORLANDO, Fla. — A manatee is getting a second chance after suffering serious injuries in a crab trap in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon.

The injured manatee was rescued and taken to SeaWorld Orlando for emergency treatment.

Veterinarians determined that the injuries to her right flipper were so severe that amputation was necessary.

Despite the traumatic injury, there is encouraging news.

The manatee is recovering well, eating on her own and receiving around-the-clock care from her veterinary team.

Her caregivers will continue closely monitoring her recovery as she adjusts to life with one flipper.

For now, the focus is on helping the manatee heal, and giving her the best chance at a full recovery.
