Human skull found by person clearing brush in Oak Hill

OAK HILL, Fla. — Someone clearing brush in Oak Hill found part of a human skull, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

The discovery was made Monday evening in the area of Reed Grove Road near Daytona Beach.

Volusia County sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said the skull appears to have been there for some time. Investigators also found a human femur, officials said.

Officials said there were no signs of trauma to the partial skull, but it will be analyzed to try to determine the cause of death, exactly how long ago the person died, whether it is a man or woman and if it could be tied to any missing persons cases.

Resident Amber Van came to see where detectives were investigating.

"I'm very sad to hear something like this turn up out here, because there's never been anything like this. I've been out here over 40 years," Van said.

The man who found the skull told Channel 9 he thought it was a piece of coconut at first but soon realized it was human. He also said he had problems with hunters poaching on the property and is now concerned there was more going on.

Van agreed the area was popular with hunters.

"There's been a lot of people through the woods out here, because the woods are basically all there is to do out here," she said.

It could take months or even years before investigators know more, officials said.
