ORLANDO, Fla. — An internal affairs investigation into a fatal officer-involved crash that killed a 92-year-old woman found the officer didn’t break the law.
Andrew McKuhen was behind the wheel of the police car that slammed into Milagros Ortiz on January 18th. She died of blunt force trauma from injuries sustained in the crash.
According to internal affairs documents obtained by Channel 9, McKuhen was trying to pursue a driver who made an illegal U-turn at the intersection of S. Semoran and Hoffner Avenue. He was traveling 32 miles an hour at the time of the crash.
Ortiz, McKuhen and the driver of the vehicle Ortiz was a passenger in were all transported to a hospital for treatment after the crash. McKuhen told investigators he had no recollection of the accident.
The State Attorney’s Office declined filing charges against McKuhen. The Orlando Police Department gave McKuhen an 80-hour suspension. He returned to full duty on May 4.
Ortiz’s family filed a $92 million wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Orlando.
