Kennedy Space Center celebrates 40 years since 1st American woman explored space

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — In June, Kennedy Space Center is celebrating 40 years since the first American woman explored space.

The center will host two panels and afternoon tea events on June 15 and 16.

“Women have played an integral role in furthering the mission of space exploration and discovery,” said Therrin Protze, chief operating officer of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. “Forty years after Sally Ride became the first American woman to launch into space, NASA is preparing to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon as part of the Artemis missions. Sally Ride inspired countless women and girls to pursue their dreams in the space program. Our Women in Space events will celebrate the on-going impact of women on the space program.”

Women in Space panels

Guests are invited to join veteran astronauts and space industry leaders for Women in Space Panels in the IMAX Theater.

The event at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, will feature veteran astronauts Anna Fisher and Kathy Thornton, as well as Caley Burke, flight design analyst, NASA’s Launch Services Program.

The event at 11 a.m.  Friday, June 16, event will feature veteran astronauts Anna Fisher and Kay Hire; Noelle Zietsman, vice president and chief engineer for Boeing Exploration Systems; and Nancy Cuty, partnership development manager, NASA KSC Center Planning.

Women in Space Afternoon Tea

The visitor complex will host a separately priced Women in Space Afternoon Tea with select panel participants each afternoon inside “Chat With An Astronaut.” During the tea, guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, tea and champagne as the space pioneers share their experiences with the audience in a small-group setting. Following the presentation, guests are invited to ask the panelists questions and take photos. Organizers said attendees will also receive a keepsake item. Tickets to the Women in Space Afternoon Tea are $83 per person and can be purchased here.
