3 teens charged for bringing gun to Mount Dora High School, police say

MOUNT DORA, Fla. — Three students were arrested for allegedly bringing a gun to Mount Dora High School on Wednesday, police said.

Jah’Jaun Edwards, 17, Jasper Tate, 16, and Timothy Newbold III, 18, were taken into custody in connection with having the gun on school grounds, according to a city news release.

Just before 1 p.m., the school resource officer was notified a student at the high school was in possession of a firearm. A city spokesperson told Channel 9 that a classmate overheard them talking about the gun in the bathroom, and told staff.

The officer and school guardian responded and requested additional patrol units, and the school was placed on lockdown, the news release states.

A few minutes later, Edwards and Tate were located and a chrome .25-caliber ACP handgun was recovered without incident.

According to the initial investigation, the teens did not threaten anyone with the gun before it was taken away, and students and staff were not in any immediate danger.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene to conduct a building search to ensure no other weapons were on campus, the news release states.

Edwards and Tate were taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice and will remain there for about two weeks. Both are facing felony charges.

Newbold was arrested Thursday morning after police said he was connected to the incident.

Detectives said Newbold was taken into custody after they were able to confirm his involvement.

The investigation is ongoing.
