MOUNT DORA, Fla. — Construction begins Tuesday in Downtown Mount Dora to convert portions of certain roads from two-way traffic to one-way streets. This will impact Alexander, Baker and Tremain Streets.
“The problem is our roads are so narrow,” Mount Dora Mayor James Homich said. “We’d have to eliminate parking if we want two-way streets. That’s not something anyone is looking to do in Downtown Mount Dora.”
After an engineering firm found the roads in their current state unsafe, Mayor Homich said the corridor is switching to a one-way design on select streets.
He says it’s expected to improve traffic flow and emergency vehicle access while still adding downtown parking spaces.
“I think it’ll be easier for people to park,” Mayor Homich said. “There are problems when you have delivery trucks coming down, people can’t get through, emergency vehicles can’t get through.”
The construction will include resurfacing portions of the selected streets and installing new signage and paint. Construction will progress one street at a time.
For Downtown Mount Dora visitor Gary Netzer, he said change can be confusing.
“They may want to talk to other cities and other areas to see what their experience is,” Netzer said.
While he said he understands safety comes first, he is unsure of this new flow.
“It creates more congestion, not less, and confusion as to where to park, from my experience,” Netzer.
Mayor Homich said that when the changes are complete, the city will consider adding additional lights to help pedestrians and cars move through.
