Melbourne teen killed in crash on I-95 in Volusia County

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 Tuesday that left one person dead.

It happened shortly before 4 p.m. in the northbound lanes just south of the ramp to State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach.

Troopers say the driver, identified only as an 18-year-old man from Melbourne, was traveling in the outside lane in a 2005 Ford Escape.

According to FHP, witnesses described seeing the driver run off the roadway to the right before he collided with multiple trees.

Troopers say the teen was partially ejected from the SUV and died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to a crash report.

The investigation into what caused the teen to run off the road is ongoing.

The highway has since been cleared of any roadblock.
