SANFORD, Fla. — More than 60 Central Florida veterans departed Wednesday morning on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials honoring their military service.
The flight took off shortly after 6 a.m. The trip gives the participating veterans an opportunity to experience something they were unable to during their time in active service.
Jack Russell, a U.S. Navy veteran participating in the flight, spoke about the opportunity to take the trip. “It’s something you could never dream of doing; it’s great. These people are doing a magnificent job and I really enjoy it.. I can’t wait to see it all,” Russell said.
The veterans are scheduled to return to Sanford Wednesday night, where a crowd of supporters will gather to thank them for their service.
