Deputies: Homeowner shot at man who broke into house

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies in east Orange County are investigating a burglary and shooting that happened early Friday morning, authorities said.

A couple said they were sleeping inside their home on Fort Thomas Way when they heard a noise around 6 a.m. The husband woke up to check the house and said he saw a man standing inside the home, according to deputies.

"That is what is scary, when they are that brazen. At that time of the morning, you would think that there are people at home," said Lourdes Clayton with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said the homeowner confronted the man and shot at him.

"Multiple shots were fired. The suspect fled on foot. We believe that he may have gotten into a four-door silver sedan and fled the scene," said Clayton.

The burglar is still on the run and deputies said they believe he was shot.

"I hope they catch the guy. I am sure they will if he got shot," said nearby resident Charlie Monroe.

Residents told Eyewitness News they're fed up with home and car break-ins in the area. The Sheriff's Office said there have been 12 cases of burglaries on Fort Thomas Way in the last year.
