Orange County family sues Discord and Roblox over child predator allegations

Lawsuit claims a 10-year-old girl was targeted by five adults.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County family has filed a lawsuit against messaging service Discord and online gaming platform Roblox, alleging the digital platforms allow adult predators to masquerade as minors.

According to the complaint, five adults targeted and abused the family’s 10-year-old daughter after coercing her to transmit sexually explicit material.

The family’s legal action follows a separate lawsuit filed against Roblox by the state in December.

In that legal filing, the state asserted that the company “misled parents about safety and failed to protect children from predators.”

Roblox has sought to have the state’s lawsuit dismissed.

Roblox declined to comment on the lawsuit filed by the Orange County family.

However, the company provided details regarding its existing platform safety protocols.

In a statement to WFTV the company says it became the first online gaming platform to require age checks for all users if they want to start a chat group.

Right now, the company says it’s focusing on helping families identify age-appropriate content to keep all users safe.
