ORLANDO, Fla. — Officers with the Orlando Police Department are continuing their search for a teenager caught on surveillance video Wednesday evening stealing a car with a 5-year-old sleeping inside.
Police said it only took seconds for the teen to jump into the Kia Soul and speed off around 7:30 p.m. at Gabriel’s Submarine Sandwich Shop on Edgewater Drive.
Investigators said a father and his fiancee stopped for food and that when the order was delayed, the father, who was waiting inside the vehicle, went inside the restaurant to check on his fiancee -- leaving his daughter alone in the vehicle.

“He stepped away for just a few seconds to check on his fiance who was already in the restaurant,” said Orlando police spokeswoman Heidi Rodriguez. “Basically, once he did this, he was able to see a young male approach the vehicle, enter the vehicle and take off with it.”
As the suspect fled the parking lot, the father unsuccessfully attempted to stop him by jumping in front of the vehicle, according to police.
A store employee took a look at the business’s surveillance video and saw how it all went down.
“It was terrible,” Kyle Gabriel told Channel 9. “One of our wonderful customers came in and placed an order. We were sitting there chatting and the next thing I know I hear the wife scream and say, ‘That’s my car. My baby is in the back of the car.’”
On Thursday, the Orlando Police Department tweeted two videos showing the suspect near the vehicle, then eventually climbing in and driving away.

Officials said the teen eventually ditched the car on Ardsley Drive, about a mile and a half down the road, with the girl still in the back seat. She has since been reunited with her family.
The alleged car thief is described a 17-year-old male, standing 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds with a flat top haircut. He was last seen wearing a red jacket with a hoodie underneath and white shorts.
