‘This wasn’t random’: Volusia County employee shot dead by other county employee over suspected ‘love triangle,’ sheriff says

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County deputies said a county employee was shot and killed by another county employee over a suspected love triangle at the Volusia County vehicle maintenance facility on Indian Lake Road.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the suspect, identified as Damian DeRousha, 43, of Edgewater, suspected the man who was killed of having had an affair with his wife, who is also a county employee.

Chitwood said the deceased employee, identified as Donald Geno, 31, of Edgewater, was shot multiple times at point-blank range while he was working on a vehicle at the facility.

Chitwood said DeRousha told his boss he need to take some time off to take care of some family business and walked next door to confront Geno about the relationship with his wife. Then investigators said he shot Geno multiple times with a semi-automatic pistol.

“This wasn’t random, it was obviously thought about and carried out,” Chitwood said.

He said after the shooting, DeRousha admitted to what he had done, laid down his coat and gun and calmly waited for deputies to arrive.

“He was very cool and collected,” Chitwood said. “He went to his supervisor and there were no signs he was under stress or distress.”

Chitwood said the victim and the suspect’s wife worked at the same facility, and the suspect worked at the county building next door.
