Police: Child hit and killed while walking to school in Ocala

OCALA, Fla. — An Ocala boy was killed Thursday morning after being hit by truck while walking to school.

According to police, the 13-year-old had been riding on the back of a motorcycle being driven by his mother on SW 20th Street, near SW 30th Court, when he saw a friend walking on the sidewalk.

Police said the woman then stopped in the center turn lane, where the child got off the motorcycle and attempted to cross the westbound lanes when he was hit by a passing Marion County Public School maintenance vehicle.

The boy was taken to a local hospital and then flown to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where he later died.

“Our hearts go out to his family during this extremely difficult time,” Ocala police said in a statement.

Investigators have not released the name of the child or the driver involved in the crash and said the crash is still under investigation.
