SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. — South Daytona police are investigating a fatal crash that killed a child and sent another to the hospital Wednesday evening.
According to police, a car was driving along Reed Canal Road near Sauls Road around 7:30 p.m. when the vehicle hit a curb and crashed into the side of the bridge.

Investigators said that after hitting the bridge, the car flipped upside down into the canal, trapping the driver and two children inside the car.
Dennis Impallomeni was one of several residents who tried to help rescue the family.
“I just totally felt helpless at that point in time. I jumped down into the ditch and another guy jumped down into the ditch with me,” he said
Impallomeni said he and the other man made it to the car but couldn’t get the car doors open.
When emergency crews arrived they were able to flip the car over and get the driver and both children out of the car.
All three were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach in critical condition.
One of the children, a 10-year-old boy, later died at the hospital.
His 12-year-old sister was flown to Shands Medical Center in Gainesville.
Investigators have not released the driver’s or children’s names and said the crash is still under investigation.
