Shooting of woman driving home in DeLand may have been targeted, police say

DELAND, Fla. — DeLand police said the shooting of a 62-year-old woman who was driving home from work may have been targeted.

Officers said they are still investigating the shooting they say happened Monday night off West Beresford Avenue. They believe the car she was driving may have been targeted based off of how many shots were fired into it.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., officers responded to the 800 block of Valleydale Avenue and located the woman with a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

Investigators say she told officers she was shot while driving in the area of Beresford Avenue and Sherwood Drive, less than a mile from her residence.

A medical helicopter flew the woman to a hospital. Family members told Channel 9 she was shot four times in her stomach and back and is lucky to be alive. They also said she was well-liked and they don’t believe she was targeted.

Police are looking into who else might have used the car she was driving and if she or anyone she lived with had any issues with anyone as they try to narrow down the list of suspects.

Detectives are still waiting for the chance to talk to the woman at the hospital. They believe that could help give them more clues on who might have done this
