Police: Suspect shot by officers during traffic stop was armed

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Newly released police body camera video shows the tense moments that led to a deadly officer-involved shooting Wednesday night.

In the video, Daytona police swarm a white Impala with guns drawn, shouting at the driver, Randy Lansang, to get out of the car.

Moments later, officers open fire on Lansang, hitting him several times.

Daytona Police Chief Jakari Young said officers had no choice but to shoot after Lansang was seen with a gun in his hand.

“Detectives observed a gun in the suspect’s right hand. At that point they discharged their firearms,” Young said.

A woman who was in the car with Lansang at the time of the shooting was not injured.

According to police, Lansang, who they say has an extensive criminal record, was a suspect in a drive-by shooting in January.

Chief Young said this was the first time any of these officers had been involved in a shooting.

“That’s never the outcome that we hope for because we do train in de-escalation tactics, but again the suspect’s actions dictated our actions last night,” Young said.

All detectives involved in the shooting have been placed on paid leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.
