Police: Teenage boy shot in Leesburg dies; teenage gunman arrested

LEESBURG, Fla. — A 17-year-old boy who was shot Thursday afternoon at an apartment complex died overnight, the Leesburg Police Department said Friday.

The shooting was reported at about 5 p.m. at the Laurel Oaks apartments on Sleepy Hollow Road near East Main Street, Leesburg police Lt. Joe Iozzi said.

A passerby picked up Elian Hughes, who was shot in the abdomen and the hand, and drove him to a nearby Lowe's, where they were met by paramedics, Iozzi said.

Investigators said Hughes was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.

"Unfortunately, the victim passed away from his injuries during the overnight hours," Iozzi said.

Before the victim was airlifted, police said he was able to tell them who opened fire.

“He provided a nickname of the suspect, so that gave us a lead and someone to follow up with,” said Iozzi.

Police said a victim at the scene also helped them track down a suspect.

The victim’s mother, Alana Hughes said she can’t believe her beloved son is gone.

“It was senseless,” she said.

Police said Mohyjah King, 17, was arrested in connection with the shooting before the victim died.

He's facing charges of homicide and possession of a firearm by a minor.

Huhges had a message for the alleged shooting.

“Your mother and them can send you money in commissary, but I’ve got to go visit my son in a shallow grave,” she said.
