Record number of rescued manatees returned to Florida’s waters

ORLANDO, Fla. — A record number of rescued manatees are back in Florida waters this week.

12 rescued manatees were tagged with GPS trackers and released back into the wild on Monday.

According to the Save The Manatee Club, that is the most released in a single day.

Most of them were orphans whose mothers died of starvation.

Officials said most of the manatee starvation is due to the loss of seagrass in the Indian River Lagoon.

Florida wildlife officials have started distributing lettuce to supplement the manatees’ diets.
