Researchers spotlight breakthrough in FDA-approved cancer treatment for dogs

ORLANDO, Fla. — A breakthrough in FDA-approved cancer treatment is changing how pet owners and their veterinarians handle tumors.

It’s called “Stelfonta.”

It’s a medication that the doctor injects into tumors that are on the skin or in the tissues just under the skin.

Research shows that for some dogs, the mass will shrink or even just fall off.

This nine-year-old boxer became a test case when Dr. William Smith used the medication for the first time.

“It was really exciting, but it was kind of scary,” said pet owner Christina Baker. “It was a new thing, you are trying a new thing that hasn’t been tried a whole lot of times, but it worked beautifully,”

Eighteen months after the surgery, Baily the boxer is as playful as ever.
