Review: Why the LiberNovo Maxis became my favorite office chair

The Maxis combines supportive seating, a ventilated cushion and a futuristic design, but the price makes it a serious purchase

ORLANDO, Fla. — My office chair has been called a NASA chair, Captain Kirk’s chair and something out of a top-secret lab. At this point, “fire the torpedoes” feels like an appropriate response when someone stops by my desk.

The LiberNovo Maxis attracts attention. In gray, it looks sharp, futuristic and noticeably different from the usual newsroom furniture.

But the appearance isn’t why it has become my favorite chair.

I’m 6 feet 2 inches tall and around 200 pounds, and I’ve owned plenty of nice office and gaming chairs over the years. This is the most comfortable I’ve felt working in one.

A chair that fits me

I review technology and other products because I enjoy finding upgrades that make everyday life better. An office chair deserves particular attention because it’s something many of us use for hours.

For me, the Maxis gets the combination of space and support right. I don’t feel squeezed into it, and I can settle into a comfortable working position without feeling like I’m giving up support.

That distinction matters. A chair can feel soft initially without being something I want to work in all day. This feels comfortable while still supporting me as I sit at my desk.

Fit is personal, though. My experience as a taller user won’t necessarily translate to someone with different proportions. Check the measurements and adjustment options rather than assuming a chair that fits me will fit everyone.

The ventilated seat is a standout

The seat ventilation is one of my favorite features.

I tend to get warm, and having airflow through the seat is a feature I appreciate while working. It’s the kind of comfort upgrade that sounds optional until you discover how much you enjoy it.

It’s worth describing accurately: this is a ventilated seat, rather than a refrigerated cushion or an air conditioner for your chair.

The Maxis comes in different versions, so check the configuration carefully. The Airflow model is the version that includes active seat ventilation.

The footrest makes a difference

The footrest is another part of the setup I love.

I like being able to support my feet while keeping a comfortable working posture. It helps the chair feel like a complete seating setup rather than something I’m constantly trying to adapt with whatever happens to be under my desk.

That doesn’t mean there’s one position I stay in all day. The appeal is having a setup that lets me get comfortable while continuing to work.

Check whether the footrest is included in the package you’re considering, rather than assuming every listing contains the same accessories.

I’m reaching for the standing-desk controls less often

The clearest sign of how much I enjoy it is that I barely use my standing desk compared with before.

That’s a description of my habits, rather than a recommendation to stay seated all day. Taking breaks and changing position still matter.

But I’m no longer as eager to stand simply because I’m uncomfortable in my chair.

I’ve also noticed fewer of the everyday aches and pains I previously associated with sitting at my desk. I feel better supported, and I feel more productive when I’m comfortable.

Those are personal observations, not medical findings or measured productivity results. I haven’t conducted a controlled comparison. What I can say is that discomfort feels less distracting during my workday.

Yes, everyone notices it

The design deserves its own mention because this chair has become an office conversation piece.

People stop, ask questions and give it nicknames. The gray finish and substantial frame make it look like equipment from a science-fiction command center.

I enjoy that. Something can be practical and still have personality.

Of course, that same presence may be a drawback if you want a chair that disappears into a small room. Consider its size and appearance alongside your desk and other furniture.

The price is the biggest obstacle

LiberNovo currently lists the Maxis Airflow starting at $1,701, with pricing dependent on configuration, accessories and promotions.

That is a substantial amount of money for an office chair, even one I enjoy this much.

I wouldn’t recommend stretching your finances simply to get the same setup. Less expensive chairs may fit your body and needs well, and a higher price doesn’t guarantee a better fit.

Before ordering, compare the exact package, warranty and return terms. If your employer offers an ergonomic-equipment allowance, it’s worth asking whether a chair purchase qualifies.

My verdict

The Maxis is my favorite of the office and gaming chairs I’ve used.

The combination of support, roominess, seat ventilation and the footrest makes it a setup I look forward to using. The futuristic appearance is a bonus, even if it means I’m now apparently commanding a spaceship from the newsroom.

For someone who can comfortably afford it, spends substantial time at a desk and finds the fit right, I would recommend it.

The strongest endorsement I can give is simple: after trying plenty of chairs over the years, this is the one I want to keep.
