Security guard shot over spilled drink at Ocala Entertainment Complex

OCALA, Fla. — A security guard at the Ocala Entertainment Complex on SW 17th Avenue was shot by a patron, according to police.

Investigators said the security guard, Josue Santiago, 25, was shot in the shoulder at about 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Police said the gunshot wound was non-life threatening.

The shooter, Deon R. Sutton, 26, became upset with the victim after Santiago knocked over his drink, police said.

Following a verbal confrontation, Santiago was escorting Sutton out of the establishment when Sutton pulled a gun from his pants, officers said.

The two struggled over the gun and it went off, hitting Santiago, police said.

Witnesses helped restrain Sutton until police arrived.

Investigators said Sutton was arrested on charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of marijuana under 20 grams, which was found in his possession while he was being treated at a local hospital for minor injuries he sustained during the incident.

Sutton was released from the hospital and transported to the Marion County Jail.

His bail amount was set at $22,500.
