SANFORD, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County issued a health alert for Lake Howell after discovering harmful blue-green algae toxins during sampling on August 5.
Officials warned residents and visitors to avoid direct contact with visible blooms and cautioned against drinking or cooking with contaminated water.
While catching certain fish is safe if prepared properly, pet owners must keep their animals away from the lake area.
