Police: Man fatally shoots boy, 17, suspected of breaking into car at Sanford home

SANFORD, Fla. — A man fatally shot a 17-year-old boy suspected of burglarizing a vehicle at his Sanford home early Tuesday, the Sanford Police Department said.

Police said they were called shortly after 1:15 a.m. to a home on Garrison Drive near Hardy Avenue and H.E. Thomas Jr. Parkway after the homeowner told an emergency dispatcher he had shot someone.

Investigators said the man told them his wife awakened him after hearing a noise outside the home.

He said he heard banging noises coming from outside the home, so he grabbed his handgun, cracked open his front door and saw someone standing beside his pickup truck in his fenced-in front yard, a police report said.

The report said he shouted at the person, who moved toward his wife’s car, and he shot at the person twice before closing the door.

Police said they discovered Adrein Green lying in the road near the home. He died at the hospital after having been shot once in the back.

Assistant State Attorney Dan Faggards said prosecutors are determining whether the shooting was justified.

“When an individual is in that protected area or inside the fence as the juvenile was this morning, that means that person is committing a burglary of a dwelling or burglary of a home when he is within the curtilage,” he said.

Investigators said Green was found with a large rock and a battery.

The shooting remains under investigation.
