SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Seminole County is taking a closer look at five busy roadways to identify potential safety improvements. The county is partnering with Metroplan Orlando to conduct road safety audits.
“The roadways are kind of difficult at times, but they are manageable,” a Seminole County driver said.
The first two corridors identified are U.S. 17-92 from W 27th St. to W 18th St., and W 25th St. from Hardy Ave. to Park Dr.
The process starts with looking at the data including crashes, traffic volumes and speeding before taking a closer look at the road itself.
The goal is to identify potential changes that could make those corridors safer.
“For pedestrian countermeasures you can put in an RRFB, a rectangular flashing beacon for cross walks,” Charley Wetzel, Seminole County’s Traffic Engineer said. “Bike lanes if the road didn’t have it. Try and focus where people cross instead of people crossing all over the place.”
County officials said this process is still in the study phase, and nothing is set in stone.
Now engineers want to hear from residents as to how they think the roads can be made safer.
“We’ve identified the corridors we want to study but we don’t have specific timelines for projects, when they would happen, where funding would come from,” Wetzel said. “Here’s potential measures at these various projects, what do you think?”
