Shopping plaza to replace former Osceola County flea market

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Developers are getting ready to replace what was Osceola County's old Flea and Farmers Market.

The property off on U.S. 192 and the Turnpike has been empty for at least two years.

A large shopping center will soon take its place.

It’ll be a big change from what nearby resident Frances Robinson is used to. She said she remembers the Cracker House Saloon and the old flea market.

“I had my haircut in there. There was a gentleman who did haircuts. It was a really nice farmers market,” said Robinson.

There's no hair salon planned yet for the property, but 24 new stores and a large parking lot.

When the land is developed, construction will still be going on nearby.

Nearly 4 miles of U.S. 192 is under construction, so shoppers trying to get there will have to dodge construction barrels for the first two years after the new shopping plaza opens.

Work to make U.S. 192 wider won't be finished until fall 2019.

“It's going to cause some disruption, but these projects always do in some way,” Robinson said.

Construction hasn’t started yet on the section of U.S. 192, but when it is finished, the section will also have sidewalks and bike lanes.
