Snorkeling accident at Bahia Honda State Park kills 77-year-old woman

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 77-year-old woman died Tuesday morning after losing consciousness while snorkeling at Bahia Honda State Park, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the victim as Joan Bell Schlauch of Edgewater, Fla. She was in seven to 10 feet of water on the Gulfside of the park when she became unresponsive at approximately 9:14 a.m.

Schlauch was snorkeling with a family member when she lost consciousness. CPR was administered immediately after she became unresponsive.

Her hometown of Edgewater is located in Volusia County.
