Some push to change Florida law that will move back school start times

ORLANDO, Fla. — A new effort is underway to stop a law that changes class start times for middle school and high school students.

The law, which will take effect in 2026, mandates that middle schools start at 8 a.m. and high schools at 8:30 a.m.

Right now, most elementary schools start between 7:45 a.m. and 8:15 a.m.

Middle schools start between 9 a.m. and 9:15 a.m., while most high schools start around 7 a.m.

A new bill was filed to undo these changes before they take effect.

The school start time changes law will be a hot topic when the legislative session begins in March.
