Student finds gun at United Brethren in Christ School, Holly Hill police say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A student found a gun in the bathroom at United Brethren in Christ School in Volusia County, Holly Hill police said.

The student who saw the weapon at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday reported the gun to a staff member, and police were called, investigators said.

Charles Mills, a 72-year-old volunteer who also provides security for the school, accidentally left the Glock 27 in a brown waistband holder in the bathroom, police said.

Mills faces charges of carrying concealed firearm on a school campus, police said.

School administrator Joshua McKeown said the school didn't want to press charges against Mills, who turns 73 on Thursday.

"A high school student went to the restroom, saw the gun, backed out and got me immediately," McKeown said. "I wish it didn't happen, but we've got to more forward from here."

Mills has a gun permit and license to carry a concealed weapon, but state law bans even legally carried guns on school properties.

Police said the gun was loaded.

"He feels terrible," McKeown said. "It's just an accident. He's the kind of guy who would do anything for you."
