Sumter County man gets 100-year sentence for shooting victim in back during ambush

Two women assisted in the crime by luring the victim to the scene via a social media chat

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — A man who shot a fleeing victim in the back during an ambush on C.R 510 will spend 100 years in prison, according to the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.

Joshua Aaron Timmons, 28, was sentenced Wednesday after a jury convicted him in September of attempted second-degree murder and six other charges.

Prosecutors said two women lured the victim to the location on Jan. 13, 2023, following a social media conversation. When the victim arrived, the women demanded money.

Timmons emerged from nearby woods, struck the victim with a gun and held the victim while the women searched the victim’s car for valuables, prosecutors said.

When the victim broke free and ran, Timmons shot the victim in the back. The bullet exited through the victim’s abdomen.

Wounded, the victim sought help at a nearby home but got no answer, then drove to another house, where residents called 911. The victim was airlifted to a hospital and was able to tell investigators what happened.

Sumter County detectives later found Timmons and both women at his mother’s home. Both women also face charges, prosecutors said.

Judge Charles L. Helm imposed two consecutive 50-year prison terms, with the remaining sentences running concurrently.

Timmons was also convicted of armed robbery, aggravated battery with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, grand theft, witness tampering and burglary of a conveyance.
