BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Three police K-9s that survived being shot in the line of duty will be honored this fall during the opening ceremony of the 8th Annual Space Coast Police K-9 Competition.
The Space Coast Police K-9 Foundation announced it will present its Courage Under Fire Award to three K-9 teams on Nov. 13 at Space Coast Stadium.
The honorees include:
- K-9 Appie and Officer Victor Guzman of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department
- K-9 Havoc and Cpl. Brent Wilson of the Columbus Police Department in Georgia
- K-9 Ace and Deputy Natalie Oestreich of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office
According to the foundation, Appie was shot while working alongside his handler. Havoc was shot while apprehending a fleeing murder suspect and survived his injuries. Ace was shot in the line of duty and later lost a leg because of his injuries. The retired K-9 now serves as a symbol of resilience and sacrifice, organizers said.
The ceremony will mark the first time all three K-9 teams have appeared together for a public tribute.
Following the award presentation, law enforcement and military K-9 teams from across the state will compete in events designed to showcase speed, agility, obedience and working skills.
The annual competition helps raise awareness and support for police and military working dogs and the training, equipment and safety resources they require.
