FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. — The Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic returns to Flagler Beach Oct. 23–25, bringing three days of competition, a memorial paddle-out and fundraising for local students and surfers.
The 24th annual event will take place just south of the Flagler Beach Pier, with 19 divisions for surfers of all ages and skill levels, according to organizers.
The contest began in 1999 in memory of local surfer Tommy Tant, who died unexpectedly the previous year at age 24.
Surfing supports scholarships
Organizers said the event has raised more than $200,000 for the community over the years. Its current efforts support student scholarships and a Fellows Program that provides grants to help local professional surfers advance their careers.
A new exhibition Saturday afternoon will feature professional surfers using a Jet Ski tow to gain speed and launch aerial maneuvers.
“My brother was a big supporter of my career, so it’s exciting to watch our Fellows Program grow into its second year and to celebrate it with two of our Fellows in the Tow-At session,” said event director Will Tant, Tommy’s younger brother.
Weekend schedule
Competition begins Friday, Oct. 23, and continues through Sunday, Oct. 25.
A kickoff party is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Craeft Surf Studio, across from the contest site. It will feature live and silent auctions and an acoustic performance by Timing Belt.
Other activities include raffles, live painting and a memorial paddle-out scheduled for midday Sunday. An awards ceremony will follow Sunday evening at Craeft Surf Studio, which organizers describe as the event’s new permanent home.
AdventHealth physicians will also be on-site to help athletes stretch and prepare between heats.
