The alert comes in response to water samples taken Monday near the pavilion area. As a result, residents are asked to use caution in and around the lake.

The Health Department is advising residents and visitors to avoid swimming in or drinking water with visible algae blooms.

People are also advised to avoid cooking or cleaning with water contaminated by algae as boiling the water won’t eliminate the toxins.

Anyone who comes into contact with the algae or water that’s discolored or foul-smelling should wash their skin and clothing with soap and water.

The health department says pets should also be kept away from the Lake Marian area as the water containing algae blooms can be particularly harmful to animals.
