Tropical storm cleanup, back-to-school shots; here are 9 things happening this week in Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — Here’s a look at some of the events taking place this week around Central Florida.

1) Checking for damages from Tropical Storm Isaias

Crews around Florida will be out Monday morning to survey for damage that may have been caused by Tropical Storm Isaias.

2) OneBlood to collect convalescent plasma donations to battle COVID-19

In an effort to help those currently battling the COVID-19 virus, OneBlood and the Orlando Fire Department will provid teams to collect convalescent plasma donations.

OneBlood will set up a collection area for donations Monday inside the Florida Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 4 warehouse.

 Orlando Fire Department members and their families who have recovered from COVID-19 and have been symptom-free for 14 days will be donating convalescent plasma at the drive.

Only people who have recovered from COVID-19 can be potential convalescent plasma donors.

3) Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried to make major announcement                                                                            

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried will hold an event on Monday at 10 a.m. to announce a major initiative.

The announcement will be made at the FDACS Conner Building in Tallahassee but it’s not clear what will be announced.

4) Lake County offers free student immunization events

Lake County will host an immunization event at Lake County Fairgrounds, 2101 County Road 452, Eustis, for students on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Another event will be held at East Ridge Middle School on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Parents and children will need to wear a mask and practice social distancing at this event.

The following required vaccinations will be provided:

- Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap).

- Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP).

- Hepatitis B (Hep B).

- Polio.

- Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).

- Varicella (Chickenpox).

There is no charge for immunization if the children are still enrolled in elementary, middle or high school. 

Parents or guardians must bring a copy of the child's immunization records.


5) Vice President Pence to campaign for Trump in Clearwater

Vice President Mike Pence will travel to Clearwater on Wednesday as part of his “Faith in America” tour.

Pence is set to talk about President Donald Trump’s administration Wednesday afternoon at Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa.

6) Orlando to open COVID-19 testing site at Camping World Stadium

Orlando will open a free COVID-19 drive-thru testing site on Wednesday at Camping World Stadium.

There are no symptom criteria for testing; however, appointments are required.

Individuals must be 18 years or older and show a valid Orlando or Orange County ID.  

The site will provide enhanced access for pedestrians and users of other public transportation with an appointment.

7) Free Tdap vaccinations for students in Osceola County

Osceola County will offer free Tdap vaccinations for seventh grade students Aug. 5 -7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Parents or guardians are asked to bring the child’s most current vaccination record and a pen to fill out paperwork.

The locations will be Neptune Middle, 2727 Neptune Road, Aug. 5; Kissimmee Middle, 2410 Dyer Blvd, Aug 6; and Bellalago Academy, 3651 Pleasant Hill Road, Aug. 7.

No appointments are necessary.


8) Deltona drive-thru back-to-school event

The city of Deltona will hold its annual back-to-school event on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The drive-thru event will provide students and families with supplies and resources to prepare for the upcoming school year.

To keep families safe, officials are asking families to remain in their vehicles.

Vehicles can enter the Dewey O. Boster Sports Complex at 1200 Saxon Blvd. and exit onto Section Line Trail.

Backpacks filled with supplies will be brought to you by volunteers. One backpack per child will be distributed for any students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. While supplies last.

Each child must be present to receive a backpack.

9) International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

Sunday, Aug. 9 marks the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.

The United Nations celebrates the day each year by sharing information on the diversity of the world’s culture.
