HAWAII — Tropical Storm Nolo has formed in the central Pacific and will be a major threat to Hawaii in the coming days.
The 5 p.m. ET advisory from the National Hurricane Center had winds of 40 mph.
A Hurricane Watch has now been posted for the Big Island of Hawaii, and hurricane preparations should be underway in this area.
Nolo is anticipated to become a hurricane on Thursday and become a major hurricane by Friday.
The storm is moving to the west-northwest but is anticipated to lift northeastward and then turn to the west just south of the Hawaiian Islands.
Hurricane conditions are possible on the Big Island as early as late Friday.
Rainfall of 15 to 20 inches, with isolated 35-inch amounts are possible across the Big Island, likely producing catastrophic flash flooding.
The remainder of the Hawaiian Islands could receive 1 to 6 inches of rain.
Large and powerful swells will likely arrive in southern Hawaii on Friday and linger through the weekend.
Nolo is the third tropical system to threaten Hawaii this year.
Lala impacted the Big Island in mid-August, and Lowell severely damaged parts of Kauai in early September.
