, Fla. — University of Central Florida physical therapy students and local volunteers will spend Thursday transforming children’s electric ride-on cars into adaptive vehicles for kids with mobility challenges.
Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital is hosting UCF’s Go Baby Go! program from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 10 at the hospital’s main lobby, 4000 Lakeland Highlands Road.
Students, hospital team members and volunteers from local schools will add adaptive switches, safety supports and personalized decorations to the cars based on each child’s needs.
Cars designed to give children more independence
Organizers say the modified vehicles are meant to give children with mobility limitations another way to play and interact with siblings and friends.
The project also gives UCF physical therapy students hands-on experience working with medically complex children.
Families will receive the finished cars between noon and 1 p.m. and will be able to take them home after the event.
Program has built more than 200 cars
Go Baby Go! is marking its 11th anniversary at UCF.
Jennifer Tucker introduced the program at the university in 2015. Since then, organizers say more than 200 cars have been retrofitted and provided to families at no cost through philanthropic support and Orlando Health’s partnership.
City Garage Motorsports will also bring a racecar, driver and crew to the event for photos and autographs.
