WILDWOOD, Fla. — A 79-year-old man is accused of using a hammer to damage a doctor’s Tesla after becoming angry about two canceled surgeries, according to the Wildwood Police Department.

Police arrested Glen Lee Ong of The Villages on charges of criminal mischief causing at least $1,000 in damage and wearing a mask while committing a felony.

Tesla video captures the damage

Officers responded Sept. 16 to Optimotion Orthopedics on East State Road 44 after employees heard two loud bangs outside the medical facility.

Police said a video recorded by the Tesla showed a masked man leave a red pickup truck and walk toward the doctor’s vehicle with a hammer. Investigators said the man struck the windshield twice before returning to the truck and leaving.

The damage was estimated at approximately $1,600.

The doctor initially told officers that he did not know who would damage his vehicle. During a follow-up investigation, however, he identified Ong as a former patient who had become upset after the doctor declined to perform surgery, according to the arrest report.

Police say suspect initially denied involvement

Officers went to Ong’s home Oct. 9 and questioned him about the incident.

According to the report, Ong initially denied being a patient at the facility, knowing the doctor and owning the red Chevrolet pickup shown in the video. Police said he later acknowledged owning a red truck but continued denying that the vehicle in investigators’ photographs belonged to him.

Officers then examined the truck in Ong’s garage. They said its license plate matched the one associated with him and found evidence that lettering visible on the truck’s rear window had been removed.

Police said Ong eventually admitted damaging the Tesla.

“That guy screwed me over, twice,” Ong told investigators, according to the report.

Ong said one procedure was canceled after he drank water before surgery and another was called off after he had prepared for the procedure. Police said Ong told them he wanted to hold the doctor accountable and teach him a lesson.

Investigators said Ong also admitted removing the truck’s license plate and window lettering because he did not want to be caught.

Ong was taken to the Sumter County Detention Center without incident. The arrest report listed no bond.
