VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County Fire Rescue is reminding families to take precautions while decorating their homes and celebrating Halloween.
Fire officials said common Halloween decorations, including candlelit jack-o’-lanterns, artificial spiderwebs and decorative lights, can create fire hazards when placed near flames or other heat sources.
Volusia County Fire Rescue recommends using battery-operated candles or LED lights instead of open flames inside pumpkins and other decorations.
Officials said decorations such as artificial spiderwebs, dried cornstalks and hay bales should be kept away from candles, light fixtures and other heat sources.
Residents are also encouraged to check decorative lights and extension cords for damaged wiring, avoid overloading electrical outlets and make sure outdoor decorations are designed for outdoor use.
Fire officials said decorations should not block doorways, walkways or other exits.
Parents are also encouraged to keep children wearing loose or flowing costumes away from candles, fireplaces and other open flames.
Before trick-or-treaters arrive, Volusia County Fire Rescue recommends residents test their smoke alarms and check that decorations and electrical equipment are safely positioned.
