VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County has removed more than 100 tons of illegally dumped material in 2026 as officials investigate a growing number of complaints involving discarded furniture, appliances, tires and construction debris.
County Solid Waste compliance officers have investigated 1,760 illegal dumping complaints so far this year. In all of 2025, the county investigated 1,774 complaints and removed more than 62 tons of material.
Compliance officers respond to reports in unincorporated areas and within city limits. At dump sites, investigators document the discarded material and search for evidence identifying where it came from or who may be responsible.
Investigations may include examining the waste for identifying information, reviewing available photos or video and speaking with witnesses.
County officials said illegal dumping can harm wildlife and natural areas, threaten water resources, create roadside hazards and block drainage systems.
Anyone who witnesses suspected illegal dumping should not approach or confront those involved. Instead, residents should safely record details including:
- The date, time and location
- A description of the people involved
- The make, model and color of any vehicle
- The vehicle’s license plate number
- Photos or video, when they can be taken safely
Residents can dispose of household garbage, bulky items, tires and household hazardous waste at the West Volusia Transfer Station and Tomoka Landfill.
Suspected illegal dumping can be reported through Volusia County’s illegal dumping website.
