7 students charged, 1 seriously injured after fight at DeLand High

DELAND, Fla. — Seven students are facing charges and one is recovering from serious injuries at an Orlando hospital after a fight at DeLand High School on Wednesday.

Police said the seven students involved in the fight were all “mutual combatants” and are each facing charges of disruption/interference with school functions, which is a misdemeanor.

One 17-year-old student is facing an additional felony charge of aggravated battery, after police said he picked up another student and threw him onto the concrete.

Officers said that student landed directly on his head and neck area and was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando with serious injuries.

“The DeLand Police Department does not condone this type of behavior and will investigate and prosecute those who engage in this type of behavior to the highest extent,” the department said in a statement.
