Deputies: Student found with loaded gun on Volusia County high school campus

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County deputies said a 16-year-old student was found with a loaded handgun in his waistband on a high school campus.

Deputies said Paul Passerrello, the school resource deputy at Atlantic High School, found out that a student posted a photo with the gun in his waistband on TikTok on Tuesday.

Investigators said the deputy located the student in the school’s gym and seized the loaded handgun.

Deputies said the gun was loaded with 10 bullets and a second loaded magazine with 11 bullets along with a holster was found in his backpack.

A relative told investigators that the student stole the gun from their locked closet without permission. Deputies said that the relative plans to press charges for the theft.

Deputies said the student told them he brought the gun to campus because he had been robbed at work last week. He is charged with possession of a firearm on school property, grand theft of a firearm and carrying a concealed firearm.

“This is exactly what we ask of every single person on every school campus in Volusia County: See something, say something, and help us keep our schools safe for everyone,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a statement.
