‘Mechanical issue’ causes Spirit flight to make unexpected landing in Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A Spirit Airlines flight bound for Fort Lauderdale made an unexpected landing at Daytona Beach International Airport on Thursday.

The airline said in a statement that the flight made the landing due to a suspected “mechanical issue.”

Airline officials said first responders met the plane on the runway, and the plane was able to taxi to a gate for passengers to deplane like normal.

“Safety is our top priority and we will be removing the plane from service to be inspected by our maintenance department,” airline officials said in a statement.

Officials said the airline is working out alternative travel methods for the passengers on board the flight, which took off from Philadelphia, and that passengers were given meal and travel vouchers.
