WATCH: Bodycam footage released in Daytona Beach officer-involved shooting

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona Beach police have released body camera footage in the officer-involved shooting that happened Monday morning.

The incident started around 8:10 a.m. near the intersection of International Speedway Boulevard and Ridgewood Avenue, according to police.

Police Chief Craig Capri said an employee at an area Popeyes pulled into the location waiting on her shift to start when a man attempted to carjack her.

The woman was able to get away to safety before calling the police.

Units soon responded to the area where they noticed the suspect walking with a rifle, according to officials. Officers then engaged the suspect after telling him to drop the rifle.

The bodycam footage shows officers ordering the man several times to put the gun down, then officers fire at least six shots in total.

“He dictated this, he caused this, and we have to protect ourselves and do what we (have) to do to survive,” Capri said.

A second perspective shows from a sergeant’s point of view as he arrives on scene with the officer.

You hear a couple shots go off before the sergeant is able to get out of his vehicle and point his gun at the suspect, and fire a couple of rounds.

“It’s unfortunate someone had to be shot in this incident, but we didn’t start this,” Capri said. “The suspect escalated this incident.”

Officers then rendered aid to the suspect before he was transported to the hospital, where he is expected to recover.

No officers were injured in the shooting.
