Volusia County schools could be used as polling places for primary

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County schools could be used as polling places for the primary in August.

Students are scheduled to return on Aug. 17 and the primary is the next day.

The hallways at Champion Elementary School in Daytona Beach are empty right now. But in less than eight weeks they will once again be brimming with students and this year, voters too.

The district is allowing the supervisor of elections to use at least 11 of its schools as polling places.

School Board Vice Chair Linda Cuthbert said the schools will be ready.

“I’m sure temperatures will be checked sanitation will be available. We will be restricting people to certain parts. We will sanitize beforehand as well as afterwards,” Cuthbert said.

It is unclear how the primary will affect the start of the school year and if it will have to be pushed back a few days.

Cuthbert said it is being worked out.

“What we suggested and voted for Tuesday we would be off Monday and Tuesday and school starts Wednesday, but it still has to be approved so it may need to be adjusted. But we may start that Monday, not have school on Tuesday and come back that Wednesday,” Cuthbert said.

The district’s calendar committee and union must approve any change in plans.
