ORLANDO, Fla. — Newly released video from the Florida Highway Patrol shows the moment a Tesla on autopilot crashed into a cruiser along I-4.
In the early morning hours of August 28, the trooper had stopped to help a driver whose SUV had broken down on I-4 near downtown Orlando.
Video shows the trooper outside of his cruiser as he helps the driver of an SUV that had crashed earlier.
The Tesla, which was traveling westbound, can be seen slamming into the cruiser before screeching to a halt just feet away from the trooper.
FHP said the driver of the Tesla told investigators that the car was on “autopilot” at the time of the crash.
In September, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration listed the crash as one of 12 crashes in its investigation of Tesla’s Autopilot system.
In an 11-page letter sent to Tesla, the agency requested detailed information on how Tesla’s Autopilot system detects and reacts to emergency vehicles parked on highways.
NHTSA has been looking into Tesla’s driver-assist systems after a series of collisions with emergency vehicles since 2018.
