BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard investigators are still working to determine how a young man ended up dead on the side of a busy highway.
The man, who deputies identifed as Rayshaan Berry, 28, was found lying along State Road 50 near Interstate 95 Monday morning.
Late Monday afternoon investigators said it appears Berry, of Titusville, suffered a gunshot wound and said his death is being treated as a homicide.
The Florida Highway Patrol shut down one westbound lane of S. R. 50 while they investigated the discovery.
"Based on the evidence we've received so far, we don't believe this is related to a traffic accident. This is a suspicious death," Major Tod Goodyear, of the Brevard County Sheriff's Department said earlier in the day.
Goodyear said deputies were called Monday morning by a passing motorist who thought someone lying near the roadway might be in need of assistance. He said the driver quickly realized the person on the side of the road was dead.
"He was dressed like he was out last night. Not out for a run or anything, but dress type clothes," Goodyear said.
Investigators spent part of the day marking potential evidence along S. R. 50, trying to sort possible evidence from roadside trash.
"We're going to mark everything that we think might have a relationship to the case that we're working. We can, of course, discount it later if it's not part of our case," Goodyear said.
Investigators said they found some items that they believe could be linked to the man.
Investigators don't think Berry was alongside the road very long before he was found. They said he could have just been there for a few hours.
The Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Anyone with information about this Investigation is asked to call Brevard County Sheriff’s Office homicide agent Wayne Simock at 321-633-8413 or call Crimeline at
